About Salvador

Salvador has over 400 years of history. It was Brazil's first capital from 1549 to 1763. It was founded by Portuguese governor Thomé de Souza as the capital of the Portuguese empire in America soon after the discovery of Brazil in 1500.

The city is preserved as a Historic Heritage of Humanity and is among the 101 places in the world that best preserve their heritage, in association with the Organization of the World Heritage Cities.

Culture

The cultural historic heritage of the city encompasses colonial houses, buildings, town houses, chapels, churches, basilicas, palaces, mansions, parks and manors, and the refinement of Portuguese tiles and the precious metal artifacts that adorn these places.

Salvador reflects the soul of Brazil: the population has features from different races, origins and cultures, especially from Native, European and African. There are many cultural expressions:

Popular Celebrations:

Carnaval, Baiana Day, Samba Day, Processions, Washing of the steps of the Bonfim church.

Dance:

The influence of the African origins is present in several folkloric dance groups.

Forts:

There are eleven buildings that symbolize past conflicts and bravery for the city.

Symbols:

Tradition and superstition are common in items like the Senhor do Bonfim ribbon.

The ribbon is tied to one’s wrist with a triple knot, each representing a wish that will come true when the ribbon falls off.

Visitors to Brazil must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months after the planned departure date from Salvador.

Climate and clothing

The sun shines all year around, the climate is tropical - hot, humid, and with average temperature around 25º C / 76º F, but there is a refreshing ocean breeze.

This makes Salvador one of the sunniest cities in the world with an average of 2.200 hours of sun per year.

Dress code is business casual during conference days.

Note: It will be summer in Salvador and the temperature is approximately 23 –29 C .

It´s recommended that you bring along sunscreen, light clothes and comfortable shoes when attending outdoor activities.

Airport

Luís Eduardo Magalhães Airport is located 30 Km from downtown.

It is the fifth busiest passenger airport in the country and handles flights from several Brazilian and foreign capitals with direct flights or connecting in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or Recife, such as:

  • Europe (Paris – Milan – London – Frankfurt)
  • Latin America (Buenos Aires – Santiago (Chile)
  • United States (Miami – New York)
